THEY’RE ALL PEASANTS, RIGHT?

We’re big fans of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show and though we miss Trevor Noah, there’s always the very knowledgeable and chomp sized biting humour of host Jon Stewart and co-hosts and correspondents like Desi Lydia, Michael Kosta and Ronnie Chiong.

Being in Hong Kong, China, interesting was a recent report on the show zeroing in on the outrage and le pissoir being taken out on Jedi Vance referring to “Chinese peasants”.

Oh dear…

This is now being rather vigorously discussed and lampooned on Weibo, China’s biggest online social media platform that makes posting and scrolling and repeat and rinsing on something like X having the impact of a stain.

Maybe X IS a stain? A Musky stain.

The news about “Chinese peasants” made it onto The Daily Show last week with correspondent and actor-comedian Ronny Chiong jokingly wondering why this story was being reported by Michael Kosta when he- an Oriental- was around.

Chiong used the show to speak a smattering of Putonghua to “his peeps” in China.

To some we know, the problem with this is that Ronny Chiong is a Malaysian Chinese- extremely different, they say, to being a Mainland China Chinese.

It’s a big old world out there, where often, the twain shall never meet, and rifts between people become even riftier and just plain stupid.
