The Happy Wednesday Diary

During the early days of Adrenaline, a C grade magician from the US was somehow booked to perform at the venue. The man was a disaster. One night he forgot his card trick and another night made a card disappear and lost it forever. Poof...

To get Happy Wednesday off the ground was a weekly series called “Finding Happy Wednesday”. It was a great fun to produce and filmed by Scottie Hui and with a revolving door of three co-hosts including Sarika Choy, Nicole Purton, Justin and Natalie.

............................

Interesting was speaking to some extremely attractive French girls who became Happy Wednesday regulars. For a long time, they believed that the same horses ran in every race and that they were owned by the jockeys who rode them.

Their betting strategy was to follow the cutest jockey and the jockey wearing the most attractive “blouse”.

Australian singer Jimmy Cupples records the new Happy Wednesday theme song and is the guest performer at the Beer Garden for the one of the Hong Kong International Jockeys Competition.

Later, he was taken out on the town and got lost in the adventures and misadventures of Wanchai.

............................

Through some twist of fate, Welsh singer-songwriter Ben Semmens arrives In Hong Kong to be the regular performer at the Beer Garden and Adrenaline for four months. He stays on for three years.

Having trouble remembering lyrics, Ben wears shades onstage so he can peek at his iPad and look at the words to the songs.

Some in the audience believe Ben is blind.

During one of the season finale private parties at Adrenaline, someone kept yelling for João Moreira to look his way. He was actually calling out to Umberto Rispoli.

............................

Lady Gai Gai aka legendary horse trainer Gai Waterhouse and television racing personality Francesca Cumani are among the guests at Adrenaline on the night of the xxxx International Jockeys Competition.

Standing in a corner with his wife and ignored by everyone is the winner of the competition- a fairly unknown jockey named João Moreira.

That same night, Hong Kong based singer Jennifer Palor made a one-off guest appearance at the venue.

She stayed on and became the regular singer at Adrenaline for five years along with her excellent backup band.

............................

I mention to someone from the Happy Wednesday team - and in a loving way- that she smells like a human ashtray. This isn’t taken well. It’s still not taken well.

............................

Somehow, the CEO of the Hong Kong Jockey Club is coerced onto the dance floor at Adrenaline by someone who had no idea who he was.

As the music grew more frenzied, his dance moves became more, well, pronounced with arms flaying all over the place.

That evening, the dance known as The Octopus was born.

............................

English football legend Kevin Keegan drops into Adrenaline while attending the races and takes in a Happy Wednesday night.

............................

Benny Andersson from ABBA is a special guest of the Swedish Consulate and attends Swedish Night at Happy Wednesday.

Benny gets lost in the ABBAmania of the evening including a performance at the Beer Garden by Australian ABBA tribute band BABBA.

............................

Using the creative photographs of Wallace Wan, introduced is Jockeyoga.

............................

The Galloping Gourmets are introduced and who create dishes named after some of Hong Kong’s most popular Jockeys.

............................

Still don’t think we tried hard enough with the HWB project...
